Lighting the Fire of a Burning Desire: Living The 8th Habit
By Lisa Nirell

How many of us work for organizations where the burning desire--or
vision that launched the business--resembles a pile of smouldering
embers?
Or worse yet, where a clear vision never really existed?
This question surfaced for me during WITI's Los Angeles conference...

Here Come the "Brides"
By Marcia Tanner, Guest Curator, San Jose Museum of Art
In Brides of Frankenstein, an exhibition on view at the San Jose Museum of Art
from July 31, 2005 through October 30, 2005, the fifteen contemporary
female artists showcased are the metaphorical mates of Dr.
Frankenstein. They use robotics, animatronics, computer animation,
video, digital photography, the Internet, computer games, and other
digital and electronic media to animate synthetic creatures with
virtual life. But as artists they resemble Mary Shelley. Their
creatures embody complex responses to the human and aesthetic
implications of the technologies that made them.
Like Shelley's, their works contemplate our relationships -
emotional, psychological, physical - with those technologies: how we
interact with them and they with us.

Women on the Move

Barbie Reed's work with girls recognized by Daytona Beach News
Barbie K. Reed was recently profiled by the Daytona Beach News in
recognition of her work helping others, especially women and girls. She
teaches workshops and conducts seminars, retreats, support groups and
life coaching sessions for women of all ages. "We need to change the
mindset of our belief system," she says, speaking of the negative
voices that women - especially teenaged girls - hear daily from
television, movies and magazines. "I know I have found my voice in this
venture," says Reed. "It has become my purpose. . . my passion. Now I
know that this is what I was meant to do. I want to give women and
girls the secret to be as successful as they have a right to be."
Barbie was the first black bank teller in the Daytona Beach
area, an experience that inspired her to create a budget and counseling
service to help people with financial problems. This venture earned her
recognition as one of the top 10 women entrepreneurs of 1989 by the US
Small Business Administration. Since then, she has launched
B.K.R. Unlimited, offering diversity training, team building and
leadership workshops to local and national businesses, governments and
organizations, including Stetson University, EVAC, VOTRAN and the City
of Daytona Beach. This past March, she was honored with the 2005
Appreciation Award by the National Association for SelfEsteem. Women's
Lifestyle Magazine presented Barbie with its Spirit Award for
Inspiration at Daytona Beach Community College in October, 2004.
